Welcome to our Timeline page, dedicated to Oakville's rich history. Although Oakville officially amalgamated with Trafalgar Township in 1962, the area has a fascinating history that dates back much further. European and American settlers began arriving in the early 1800s. Still, before that, the area was originally home to Indigenous Peoples who practised agriculture, hunted, fished, and traded in the region until 1847. The area now known as Oakville was once comprised of various villages and hamlets. These included Palermo, Omagh, Drumquin, Postville, Boyne, Ash, Bronte, Glenorchy, Hornby, Merton, Munn's Corner, Proudfoot Hollow, and Sheridan. These villages shared resources and traded with each other over the years, making their histories intertwined and linked. |
To help you understand Oakville's rich and diverse history, we have created a timeline of important events and exciting facts before the amalgamation (and a few after). This "living document" timeline will continue evolving and growing. We encourage you to explore this timeline and share your comments and feedback with us as we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of modern-day Oakville's history.
